Application acceptance has been opened by Shanghai Sci-tech Co-research Program 2026. This is Shanghai’s program that designed to support joint scientific project of Chinese organizations between Chinese organizations and international researchers.
It is not a fellowship or an individual scholarship, but rather project financial support for the joint scientific activities. You cannot submit your application without a partner in Shanghai – the applications must be submitted through a host organization in Shanghai (which could be university, institute, laboratory, or R&D center). If you don’t yet have such contacts, it should be the first step of yours to find a partner. Colleges from Shanghai Science and Technology Exchange Center may assist you with this.
Requirements: age under 45, a PhD (from candidate’s degree and above) in natural sciences or engineering, employment outside of China (university, researching institute, lab or corporate R&D), not permanently employed in China and willingness to be in Shanghai for at least 6 months during 2-year project period (including at least 1 continuous visit about 3 months).
Research directions:
This program does not have a priority list of industries or thematic focuses; it is aimed at supporting joint scientific activity in the field of fundamental science and advance (cutting-edge) technical branches, with an emphasis on high-risk, high-value basic research.
Conditions:
- 400,000 yuan for the research (fixed grand);
- implementation period: 2 years;
- financial support for the project expenses (not an individual scholarship);
- official status as an international joint research project;
- the opportunity to build long-term cooperation with China.
Applications are accepted from January 28 to December 31, 2026. Projects will be considered in batches throughout the year.
This program is an excellent opportunity for those who have already published their works and have a clear scientific focus, and now wish to collaborate with Chinese colleges through partnership without full relocation. If your colleges are interested in participating in this program - share this post with them. If you would like to read more – follow the link in the first paragraph. We may not know if you are a good friend of China, but China is the good friend to all promising scientists.
