VSTU Scientists Awarded A.F. Davis Silver Medal by the American Welding Society (AWS)

3.03.2026

A team of authors from the Department of Welding Equipment and Technology at Volgograd State Technical University has been awarded the A.F. Davis Silver Medal by the American Welding Society (AWS). The award is for the best paper in the "Design of Welding Processes, Machines, and Equipment" category, published in the AWS Welding Journal in 2025. The paper is titled "The Effect of Ultrasonic Vibrations on the Electrophysical Properties of a Non-Consumable Electrode Arc."

The published work focuses on investigating the effect of ultrasonic vibrations on the electrophysical characteristics of the welding arc and the processes occurring in its anode and cathode regions. The results obtained by the authors make it possible to increase the thermal power of the welding arc and improve the productivity of argon-arc welding of steel structures with a non-consumable electrode.

The team of scientists from Volgograd State Technical University includes:

  • Prof. Alexander Savinov, D.Sc.
  • Assoc. Prof. Artyom Chudin, Ph.D.
  • Assoc. Prof. Oleg Polessky, Ph.D.
  • Academician Vladimir Lysak, D.Sc.
  • Assoc. Prof. Pavel Krasikov, Ph.D.
  • Postgraduate student Dmitry Murugov.

The award ceremony will take place in Las Vegas from October 21 to 23, 2026.

The origin of the latter:

Dear Alexander Savinov, Artem Chudin, Oleg Polessky, Vladimir Lysak, Pavel

Krasikov, and Dmitry Murugov:

Congratulations! I am pleased to inform you that your peers have selected

you to be co-recipients of the A. F. Davis Silver Medal Award. It's awarded

to the authors of papers published in the Welding Journal during the

previous calendar year that represent the best contributions to the progress

of welding in the categories of (l) Design of Welding Processes, Machines,

and Equipment, (2) Maintenance, Repair and Surfacing, (3) Design of welded

structures and equipment, and (4) Designs that Improve Skills Development,

Education, and Training. Your paper, "Influence of Ultrasonic Vibration on

the Electrophysical Properties of an Arc with a Nonconsumable Electrode"

printed in the May 2025 issue of the Welding Journal won for the Design of

Welding Processes, Machines, and Equipment category.

We wish to honor you at our AWS Awards Recognition Ceremony. This ceremony

will be held in conjunction with the 2026 FABTECH in Las Vegas, Nevada from

October 21-23. The ceremony will be on Thursday, October 22, at the Las

Vegas Convention Center. More information on the event will be provided
