Students and faculty of VSTU took part in the opening of the photo exhibition "The Soviet-Japanese War of 1945," part of the "Liberation. Peace to the Peoples" project, which tells the story of the Far East's role in the defeat of Japan, the third country of the Nazi bloc. The event was timed to coincide with Defender of the Fatherland Day, the university's press service reported to RIA Novosti.
The mobile exhibition "The Soviet-Japanese War of 1945" includes photographs taken by Soviet correspondents from August to September 1945. They capture key moments of military operations and the faces of ordinary people: soldiers, sailors, and home front workers who contributed to the Victory over militaristic Japan. The project is based on the photo archive of the Sovinformburo, the copyright holder of which is the Rossiya Segodnya media group.
The exhibition allows our contemporaries to connect with the feat of their grandfathers and great-grandfathers who defeated militaristic Japan, noted Olga Peskova, Vice-Rector for Youth Policy at Volgograd State Technical University (VSTU).
"For us, living on Stalingrad soil, knowing about the horrors of the Great Patriotic War and the exploits of the Soviet people not only from books and films, but firsthand – from the older generation – it is especially important to preserve historical memory and cultivate patriotism among young people. In this exhibition, pages of history come to life: from the Kuril operation to the surrender of the Kwantung Army. This is a tribute to the heroes who made a decisive contribution to ending the global war, whose fortitude ensured peace in the Far East," she emphasized.
According to the organizers, the exhibition will help preserve the living historical memory of the heroes, prevent the distortion of facts, and remind us of the price of peace in modern society. Earlier, the university had already presented modules of the mobile exhibitions "Liberation. Crimea," "Liberated Europe," and "Liberation. 1943-1945."
The "Liberation. Peace to the Peoples" project has gathered a multi-million audience and has become a winner of the national programs "Best Social Projects of Russia" (in 2023 and 2024), "Corporate Museum" (in 2024 and 2025), and "For Loyalty to Science." It was created by the Rossiya Segodnya media group with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.
